General Island Information
Location
Little Cumberland Island, a part of Camden County, Georgia, lies at the north end of Cumberland Island, about eleven miles southeast of Brunswick, Georgia, and four miles south of Jekyll Island. Approximately 3 miles long, it is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and St Andrews Sound, including the Intracoastal Waterway on the west.
Conservation, Ownership and Description of Land
Little Cumberland is owned by the Little Cumberland Island Homes Association and its stockholders. The Association was established in 1965 and incorporated under Georgia law for the purpose of maintaining this coastal island resource, including native wildlife and plants, in as near its natural state as possible, and to a limited extent, providing members with home sites that do not interfere with the natural integrity of the Island. The corporation is managed by a Board of Directors, all of whom are unpaid volunteers. All property is subject to restrictive covenants designed to preserve the Island in as close to a natural state as possible. In 1972, Congress established the Cumberland Island National Seashore, and included Little Cumberland Island within its boundaries. The Island is privately owned for preservation and access is limited.
